Funding Proposal: OMN Sports Travel Request

The rivalry game between Oregon State and the University of Oregon was previously known under the moniker, "The Civil War." This proposal is for travel for students to the game, including budget and outcomes. The rivalry series name is currently in the process of being changed.

I submitted said pitch as the Sports Editor in Chief with Orange Media Network, a position I held from June 2019 to July 2020.

Event Overview

The Oregon State Beaver Football team faces the Oregon Ducks each year in what is dubbed the Civil War. Although the rivalry exists between the two teams in other sports and other capacities, the Civil War football game is the pinnacle of this rivalry.

DATE: The game is scheduled for November 30, 2019. The kick-off time has yet to be set.

NEWS VALUES

  • IMPACT: The Civil War may be the highest point of visibility for the OSU Football team for the season. Fans often care more about this game than the season in its entirety. A win means bragging rights for the next 364 days against a deep-running rival. By covering the game, fan bases will see Orange Media Network Sports as a high-level coverage source and will help promote the fan base to turn to our coverage for other sports in the coming future.
  • TIMELINESS: By covering the game directly at the event via radio, social media, photography, and writing, we will be able to give up-to-date and current game updates for fan bases.
  • PROXIMITY: While the game may be held in Eugene this year, it will be held in Corvallis once again next year. It may not be a home game, but it directly relates to our campus and the Athletics here.
  • RELEVANCE: By sending our own students to cover the game, they will have a unique perspective on the game as the student-athletes on the field are their peers. By sending OSU students to cover a game with OSU students, it will strengthen our ability to have unique coverage of the Civil War football game.

Equipment and Support

Should we be able to reach Tier 1 coverage, we require the totality of the radio broadcasting equipment, potentially a camera (depending on the photographer’s needs), and a video camera for multimedia coverage. Each personnel would also require a media pass, likely provided from the OSU Athletics department. Each declining tier would require less equipment as necessary.

Additionally, if a Motor Pool vehicle is required as vehicular transportation, I will need support in securing the proper application completion for a driver.

Coverage Promotion

Any coverage of this game will require social media support from the Daily Baro, KBVR FM, and Orange Media Network. Additionally, creating a social media plan and a promotional plan with the marketing department would allow for a consistent and effective result of the coverage.

The only required vehicle that is needed is a van that can fit 5 individuals and their equipment as it will be a single-day trip.

Estimated costs will include the pay for the paid employees of OMN who will be covering the game, possibly a paid parking permit at the stadium, and gas for travel.
